Good Looking Loser's Phenibut Review
(A Social Anxiety Supplement That Isn't a Scam)

Disclaimer: This Phenibut review is based on my personal experience with the compound over the past 10 years. I am not a medical professional. Please talk to your doctor before using any compounds even if they are sold over-the-counter. This information is subject to our medical disclaimer.

If this is your first visit to 'Lifestyle by Good Looking Loser', welcome aboard.

I'm Chris.

I'm going to tell you about one of the only over-the-counter compounds that can make a BIG TIME difference on general and social anxiety.

It's called 'Phenibut'.

Unlike most anti-anxiety prescription drugs, Phenibut will both make you want to socialize and kill your anxiety without leaving you feeling like an introverted, indifferent, unmotivated, antisocial zombie.

And Unlike other dietary supplements and 'natural' compounds - Phenibut actually works.

Enjoy. But don't take it everyday. :)

About Our Recommendation
(updated June 11th 2015)

I recommend Happy Hippo because all of their stuff is REALLY GOOD, Phenibut included.

A 50g or 100g bag of Phenibut should last you SEVERAL months if you are taking it as directed.
(Our Phenibut forum has plenty of reviews of the exact stuff that Hippo sells)

In this Review, I will tell you-

  • How it works
  • What Phenibut ‘feels’ like
  • EXACTLY what to expect
  • How to use it
  • My personal experience
  • Comparisons to other stuff I’ve tried
  • …and more

General Information

Phenibut For Social FreedomPhenibut is a legal compound that is sold in most countries as a dietary supplement. It is among several compounds that I recommend (and have used) to combat anxiety. I do not have general anxiety or social anxiety, I merely use Phenibut as a “performance enhancer,” it is it not meant to treat any condition.

Phenibut can be purchased on the Internet, at health food stores and in combination with other dietary supplements in the United States. In Russia, Phenbut is available by prescription only and is used to treat general anxiety, social anxiety, depression and to improve quality of sleep.

The source recommended in this Phenibut review is the EXACT kind that Scotty and I use. I suggest using that source rather than risking getting a bunk batch.
(to be fair - other than a brief period in 2010ish, all the Phenibut in the US market has been legit)

If you've searched for other Phenibut user reviews, you'll find a lot of people that say it's really good and other people that didn't get much out of it. Chances are, the people that say it "didn't work," didn't use it correctly.

Real Phenibut works, underdosed or fake Phenibut doesn't.

Most people will be pretty happy with this obscure dietary supplement - but you've got to give a few tries to get the dosing/timing correct.
(While Phenibut lasts for a long time, it takes a while to kick in)

keep-calm-and-carry-onHow Phenibut Works

Phenibut (beta-phenyl-gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a derivative of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). Unlike GABA, however, Phenibut can easily pass through the blood-brain barrier and bind to the GABA receptors in the brain. Compounds that bind to GABA receptors (alcohol, benzodiazepines) can significantly reduce anxiety, produce moderate levels of euphoria and induce sleep in higher doses. Any compounds that tickle the GABA receptors, however, usually produce a fast tolerance. In short, Phenibut binds to the GABA receptors in your brain (similar to alcohol and prescription anti-anxiety compounds).

There are several benefits to Phenibut, including but not limited to- stress relief, anxiety relief, improved cognitive function, increased memory retention, sense of well-being and improved sleep quality. Phenibut mimics GABA that is endogenously produced (produced within the body), binding to GABA-B receptors in the brain and to some extent GABA-A receptors. Phenibut brings on a sense of relaxation and improves cognitive ability. Many users have found that this relaxing effect of Phenibut makes it easier to fall asleep and that the quality of sleep is improved as well. Phenibut also has the ability to stimulate dopamine receptors that may contribute to its mood boosting benefits.

Phenibut supposedly has a half-life of about 5 hours. How long it works seems to vary significantly though. Some users find the effects of Phenibut to be short-lasting while most others still experience the effects of Phenibut as long as 24 hours after taking a dose. How long Phenibut lasts is dependent upon several things- the time since your last meal, your current state, the environment you are in and how much caffeine (or other stimulant) that you have consumed.

One downside of Phenibut is that tolerance is quite common and appears to develop fairly quickly. To maintain effectiveness, Phenibut should be used only on occasion or cycled. As directed, you can use Phenibut 5 days a week, so long as you take 2 days off. Another suggested method is cycling Phenibut – 2 weeks ON and 2 weeks OFF. I have not tried that protocol however.

What Does Phenibut “Feel” Like?

In my personal experience, these are some of the noticeable effects that I feel-

  • The best description of a good Phenibut experience is “extreme calmness”
  • A moderate to drastic reduction in anxiety - general and social
  • A moderate to drastic increase in pro social behavior and the desire to be social
  • A moderate to pronounced “sense of well-being”
  • A slight to moderate euphoria; high levels of euphoria can be achieved sometimes
  • Music sounds amazing, somewhat like MDMA
  • Slight to drastic increase in alertness, this is also due to stimulants
  • Moderate increase in cognitive processes (you think faster)
  • Dilated pupils from taking 3000mg+ in a 24/hr period
  • Slightly improved memory retention
  • Increased sexual performance (low doses)
  • Unlike benzodiazepines, Phenibut enhances instead of killing your motivation

What Should I Expect?keep-calm-and-eat-cupcakes

If you take Phenibut as directed (or the suggested dosing schedule at the bottom of this Phenibut review), on an empty stomach, you should expect some degree (or a lot) of effects that I mentioned just above.

Phenibut, when not abused, is a very 'clean' compound. There are no jitters, crash, discoordination or other annoying side effects.

At its best, Phenibut will feel like a small to moderate dose of MDMA or GHB.

At its worst, Phenibut won't do anything at all (mainly true if you eat food with it or get a BUNK/FAKE source)

As with a lot of dietary supplements that produce cognitive effects or other recreational compounds, it may require a bit of experimentation. You will have to do some trial and error.

What Should I Expect from Phenibut?

As you [should] know, anything that I recommend on, I use, I believe in and I have done my homework on.

Admittedly, I give recommendations that I KNOW will reflect positively upon our community.

The vast majority will be pleased with this compound, especially if you try the pure Phenibut that we recommend.

At the same time, I also want to put in perspective what your expectations should realistically be and hopefully over-deliver for you. Not every recommendation will absolutely BLOW your mind. All of them, I feel, will be worth your time and money.

Here’s the deal on Phenibut-

It will work pretty well for most people. Some people, a minority, might not like it. It is inexpensive, very low on side effects, so I believe it’s worth a try. You have a lot to gain and very little to lose.

With that said, Phenibut is no joke.

It IS NOT like some hippy “herbal lemongrass remedy” that promises to “totally kill your anxiety, naturally!”

Phenibut is restricted in some countries because it is a fairly powerful compound (and governments don’t want people taking anything inexpensive that works beside antidepressants that make pharmaceutical companies rich). Like I said, at its very best (combine with a stimulant), it can SOMETIMES reasonably mimic the effects of decent quality GHB, MDMA and some other powerful anti-anxiety drugs. Don't underestimate it just because it is a legal dietary supplement. At the same time, it's not a 'hardcore' drug.

Follow the dosing schedule listed below and your experience should go as I outlined in this Phenibut review.

In order to get the MAXIMUM benefits, you will ultimately have to figure out how to make it work best for you, your timing schedule, your diet with, how much caffeine to combine it with and so forth. I feel it is definitely worth a try, otherwise I wouldn’t be recommending it. I’ve had A LOT of awesome nights with (not necessarily because of) it.

If a guy as an average amount of anxiety, he can be nearly completely socially-free on Phenibut. It can be THAT good. For most guys it will be equal to or better than alcohol. But it may require some trial and error to find what dose and protocol works best for you.

Good Looking Loser's Experience With Phenibut

Blue GLL LogoI think Phenibut is a very good compound.

It is inexpensive, legal and effective for both day and night “game”.

I have slept at least 40+ girls when I have with at least some Phenibut in my system. It seems to make me want to dance.

Girls like it too.

Ladies- take it before you have sex or masturbate - it may lead to a CRAZY ORGASM. Several orgasms.

For more information about how Phenibut feels in the bedroom, check out this post -

These days, I take it as very low doses just to take the ‘edge’ off, I don’t use it for sleep since that requires a large dose which can increase tolerance quickly.

Between 2008-2011, I used to take it about 3 times a week as I discuss in "How to Go Out Alone - Good Moods & Bad Moods". Taking 3 times a week is pushing it though. Don't take it more than 2 times a week.
(search for the text 'phenibut')

Comparisons to Other Stuff I’ve Tried

Before I offer comparisons, it should be noted that Phenibut is a legal compound that is sold as a dietary supplement. It is still fairly powerful, but it’s not fair to compare it to hardcore drugs such as cocaine or speed. I know I mentioned that already, but it's important that we keep that in perspective and have a frame of reference for these comparisons.

I feel [a good experience] on Phenibut is similar to the combination of a moderate amount of alcohol with a little marijuana without the discoordination or cognitive impairment. I like it better than both. But I don't really like alcohol or marijuana that much. It combines very well with opioids such as Tramadol and Kratom. If you take any prescription drugs with Phenibut, make sure you have a legitimate prescription and only use under your doctor’s care.

While not as strong as other hardcore drugs, Phenibut offers several benefits - it’s inexpensive, it works, it has low potential for abuse and it doesn’t impair you.

Who Won't Benefit From Phenibut?

Phenibut works for most. But not all.

If you have a tolerance to other gaba-stimulating compounds (such as Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, etc.), Phenibut is unlikely to work it's magic. It will probably just make you feel normal since you have a dependence on similar compounds.

Those who don't get anything from Phenibut almost always have an existing gaba (benzodiazepine) tolerance.

You need to have pretty clean gaba receptors in order to really experience Phenibut.

Do not take Phenibut with any other prescription drugs, especially benzodiazepines.

How To Properly Take Phenibut
(this matters a lot!)

This dosing schedule follows how several manufacturers say to take it.

Consult your doctor if you feel it necessary.

When you wake up in the morning, on a COMPLETELY empty stomach take 1000mg (1 gram) of Phenibut.* If you are using the capsules that will be 2 pills. Take Phenibut with water or another drink that does not have calories (tea).
* Take 1500mg (1.5grams) of Phenibut if you weigh over 210lbs.

I highly recommend combining it with a stimulant. 80-160mg of caffeine will work. A cup of coffee is ~106mg. Your average soda is 55mg (Mt. Dew/Diet Mt. Dew/Dr. Pepper/Diet Dr. Pepper is ~70mg). So that would be 2 diet sodas or 1 cup of coffee, 1 energy drink would sure as hell be enough too.

Harder stimulants like ADDerall (requires Rx), Ephedrine, 1,3 dimethylamylamine will be even better. It's not a great idea to make a habit of taking those. Consider also that stronger stimulants can cause temporary erectile dysfunction since they constrict blood vessels to achieve their intended effects.

Don't worry - you WON'T get caffeine, stimulant jitters or elevated anxiety since the Phenibut will nearly totally KILL them.

popular energy drinks

Here is a list of caffeinated beverages-

About 45 minutes after taking your first Phenibut dose, eat some food if you want.

At about 90 minutes to 2 hours after your Phenibut dose, evaluate how you feel. Phenibut is weird sometimes; it may take 4-5 hours to even feel it. It usually produces noticeable effects in about 2 hours or sooner.

Music sounds incredible from taking Phenibut. If you honestly feel NOTHING after 2 hours, take 500-1000mg more.

This will make you feel [nearly] completely anxiety free so long as you don't have extreme clinical anxiety/depression or neurotransmitter deficiencies.

5 Hours AFTER your first dose, re-evaluate how you feel (and based on your plans for the rest of the day, night) consider taking 500-1000mg (1-2 pills) more.

You shouldn't exceed 8 total capsules (4000mg) in a 24-hour period, its not necessary anyway. The 3000-4000mg dosage AT ONCE is for SLEEP. You need a BIG dose to induce sleep. It will knock you out like GHB [can do]. The sleep is incredible, but it may 'hang-over' until the next day. If you take smaller doses, there shouldn't be a 'hang-over,' there may be an 'afterglow' which feels awesome.

Here is a short version of the dosing schedule-

  • Wake up - take 1000-1500mg
  • +2 hours (after your first dose)- consider taking 1000mg more
  • +5 hours later- consider taking 500-1000mg
(just evaluate how you feel on an hourly basis, it takes a while to kick in but it lasts for a long time)

Can I Combine Phenibut With Alcohol?

If you do, don’t drive.

A lot of guys take Phenibut and drink alcohol. Since I don't really drink alcohol too often, I only have a handful of experiences with the combination.

Most guys agree that Phenibut makes 1 drink feels like 3 drinks... and 3 drinks feels like 7 or 8 drinks. This is especially true if you are on an empty stomach. I don't recommend drinking too much alcohol. In my opinion, for me (for whatever reason) combining alcohol with other compounds fucks up my buzz, makes it less fun. I don't usually combine stuff with alcohol. That's just me though, others seem to have better success.

Is There Potential for Addiction or Dependency?

Keep in mind that - there is potential for addiction and dependency with EVERY psychoactive compound.

Lets keep this in perspective.

This includes better-known compounds such as marijuana and alcohol. Some people get addicted to alcohol and weed. I absolutely DO NOT think that the potential for addiction and dependency with Phenibut is any higher than alcohol or marijuana. It is certainly less than hardcore drugs such as heroin, cocaine, MDMA and methamphetamine.

Still, there are 2 reasons to not take Phenibut everyday or more than 3-4 times a week.

  1. Tolerance seems to build SUPER fast, people don't really know why. My theory is that, in general, your brain easily recognizes ALL compounds that work on the GABA (especially GABA-b) receptors and adjusts by producing new receptors (that need to up-regulate later), you need to take more to achieve similar effects (valium, xanax, all benzos that work on the GABA sites) are all this way too. If you take it 1-3 days a week with 4 days in between, you'll be completely fine. There's no hangover from Phenibut. In fact, most people experience the Phenibut “afterglow” and feel great the following day (the compound is still active).
  2. As mentioned, there are some potential for addiction and dependency. The potential is low however.

I belong to the small percentage of people that has a rather mild reaction to phenibut. Recently I ordered some fasoracetam, because I read read about gaba-b upregulation amongst other interesting effects. Normally I would have mild effects Form taking 2-3 gramms of phenibut, but after taking 10 mg of fasoracetam sublingually for 3 days (many people use up to 50mg at a time) I felt almost overwhelmed by 1 gram of phenibut. The only downside of Fasoracetam so far seems to be a decrease in libido so rather not take it daily ;)

Phenibut I best used in smaller dosages. 350-500mg still has a great effect on anxiety even though the psychoactive effects may not be as apparent. Not recommended to be used everyday and those larger dosages are certainly more addicting. Using 2-3 days >1g in a row will have some negative rebound effects.

I would attribute 500mg to about 3 beers in terms of anxiolytic effects without noticeable inhibition of the CNS (like alcohol would do). Sensitive individuals should try even lower. Personally, I like the 500g range.

  • Yup I prefer smaller amounts too. Can take it more often without dependency issues.

Thanks so much for this page and your review. I had never heard of phenibut until today. I was doing a search on the off label uses for the prescription drug, baclofen, which is a GABA agonist (I believe). Baclofen is typically prescribed for muscle spasticity (like a muscle relaxant) but I've recently heard abut its use in France to "treat alcoholism", cocaine and other addictions and PTSD. I'm interested in the baclofen to see if it could help w/ my anxiety and crippling treatment-resistant depression. Someone on another site mentioned that phenibut was similar to baclofen. I am very much interested in trying the phenibut but have a couple questions. I am prescribed oxycodone for chronic pain. Do you know of any contraindications with phenibut and opiates? I have a physical addiction/tolerance to the opiates and wondering if phenibut would either potentiate the oxy or if it could potentially block the effects of the oxy (I once tried the supplement, NAC (N-acetyl-L-cysteine), to see if it would help with my depression and obsessive thought disorder but it ended up having a blocking effect on opiates. It works on the NMDA receptors and has something to do w/releasing glutamate). I've been on the oxy for so long, I'm pretty sure my brain no longer produces dopamine on it's own. Do you know phenibut's effects on dopamine? Do you think phenibut would be helpful for sever depression? Last question: I also take gabapentin (Neurontin) on a semi regular basis (mostly for sleep). You mentioned that if you have a tolerance to drugs that work on GABA (such as benzos), the phenibut may not be effective. Do you think the same goes for gabapentin? (from wikipedia on gabapenntin: "though similar in structure to the endogenous neurotransmitter GABA, gabapentin has not been shown to bind to GABA receptors...
)? Though my tolerance to the gabapentin raises extremely fast, I've never had any noticeable withdrawal when I stop taking it and it only takes from a few days to a week to get my tolerance back down.

I'm really hoping that the phenibut could be the magic bullet I've been searching for after all these years!
Sorry for the lengthiness of my comment/questions and thanks in advance!!

  • **this is not medical advice, please discuss your medications/supplements with your doctor

My suggestion is to get off the Oxy and see if Kratom can take care of the pain.

If you are taking Phenibut or Gabapentin or Valium or any benzo everyday - you will eventually becoming dependent, which is highly discouraged. Phenibut is something you only want to take a couple of time a week.

I realized after I posted that I should've given more thought to all of what I asked and also remembered that in your review, you said phenibut should not be taken so often as would probably be needed for anti-depressive effects. I realize you're not a doctor but thought maybe you might have some insight as to any sort of anti-depressant effect from the phenibut or it's interaction with opiates. Easy enough to google, which is how I got to your site in the first place.

Thanks for the advice on kratom. Have heard of it but never looked into it. Will check it out.

    Thank you for your time.

I think it was found that phenibut acts like gabapentin in that it blocks an α2δ voltage calcium channel rather than the agonist of GABA a/b you talk about. Interesting stuff though!

I've tried phenibut twice, waiting until it's been a long while since eating. First time I took 500mg and then another 500 hours later. Second time I did a straight ~650 mg once. Both with caffeine.

Both times my stomach has felt kind of funny, and I just felt grumpy and woozy. I am worried to up the dosage to the 1000mg if the small amount made me feel that way. DEFINITELY felt the effects though, and realized I should definitely never drive on the stuff. My social anxiety was subsided but only after it had mostly worn off. Kratom has had much better effects for me. Has anyone had the woozy feeling and then upped the dose and gotten positive effects?

    0 Short URL: Reply
  • It's hard to say Alex. Try more caffeine. Kratom might just be better for you, but don't give up just yet. There is a lot to gain if you can figure out Phenibut.

I am waiting for my first phenibut order from Happy Hippo. I am currently taking Lexapro for Anxiety and it works but I stil suffer from time to time. I tried running a drug interaction checker but because phenibut isn't regulated in the United States I could not find out if it was contraindicated. Wondering if anyone has any experience combining the two and if it is safe to try? Any input would be appreciated.

    0 Short URL: Reply
  • Hey Sarah -

i've got to stay "talk to your doctor" before using any dietary supplement, but Lexapro works on serotonin and Phenibut on gaba receptors. So - No, there shouldn't be any issues.

The people that doesn't respond to phenibut generally have a gaba tolerance/dependency because they take Benzos (valium, klonopin, xanax, etc.) --- in which case, there IS a cross-tolerance and combining the 2 is highly discouraged.

I like kratom. I tried phenibut one time. Did 1 gram and 3 hours later i did 2 grams. I didn't feel anything for a couple more hours but it hit me real bad! I got sick throwing up and felt drained all night at work. I then crashed and slept 13 hours. Any advice or insight would be appreciated. May try it again.

  • Hey Tony -

    Welcome to GLL.

You took too much Phenibut... plain and simple.

That is more than I ever taken. Stick with 1.5 - 2 grams and see how you feel 4-5 hrs later. It takes a while to kick in, so it's sneaky like that until you know what your doing :-)

Great article, just bought this supplement. By the way, why would you recommend caffeine if phenibut kills it?
